A MindPick’d Comics Review: DC’s “Batwoman” #5
Batwoman’s first volume, ‘Hydrology’, comes to an exciting close.
Writers: J.H. Williams III & W. Haden Blackman
Artist: J.H. Williams III
The Weeping Woman, a spectral gal who has been kidnapping Gotham’s children, has been terrorizing Batwoman (Kate Kane) for five issues now. The thing is, this villainess isn’t the only one – also on Batwoman’s tail has been Agent Chase and Director Bones who are employed the Department of Extranormal Operations (they keep track of the ‘capes’). With Kate dealing with all of this plus a falling out with her cousin and ex-ward, pressure has been immense, but will she overcome?

The issue opens with Batwoman finally figuring out how to dispatch The Weeping Woman; she does so (complete with a haunting showdown), but it only raises another question – that question being: “Who the hell is Medusa?!” Chase and Bones show up at Kate’s place considering her identity was revealed by the battered Flamebird (Bette Kane, cousin) last issue. Bones reveals that Medusa is actually a “global criminal cartel” and offers Kate a unique opportunity: Join the D.E.O. and her father doesn’t go to prison for helping her, a vigilante. It leaves Kate in an interesting situation seeing as it will eventually make her butt heads with Batman. The issue closes with Batwoman revisiting the parents of missing children, showing how high of a resolve Kate Kane really has.
If DC’s new line-up with the ‘New 52′ has proven anything, it’s that close creative teams triumph over everybody else. Williams and Blackman close out the first chapter of their incredibly believable and haunting character’s title. Williams still astonishes with gorgeous visuals and layouts of the like you’ll be hard pressed to find in any other title on the stands.
If you haven’t kept up with Batwoman, it’s definitely time for you to catch up. I never had doubts, but this team has clearly proven themselves on this book. I cannot wait for the next story arch, and neither should you!
